Discussion History (cont.)  The idea of this proposal has been presented in the following meetings SC 32 Plenary and WG 2 Meetings, Jeju, Korea, June 2009. – Approved as a subdivision of ISO/IEC 20943 Part 6 – SC32 N1887 JTC1/SC32 Plenary Resolutions, 2009-06-26 : 32N1887-SC32_Jeju_plenary_resolutions.pdf – SC32/WG2 N1283 Presentation on Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology : WG2_N1283_Presentation_EMDR-Korea.ppt SC 32/WG 2: Wuhan Study Period Meeting on ROR, ODMS, PSO, SQL/MM-8 MDR, Wuhan, China, August 2009. – SC32/WG2 N1313 : WG2_N1313_WHU_ROS_09_019_MeetingMinutes.pdf – Discussion on the comments from Canana (SC32/WG2 N1291) 4 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Background & Motivation 5 MDR (Metadata Registry, ISO/IEC 11179) Semantic Web Syntactic Web Ontology Contains standardized (common) concepts for various applications fields Specifying Web ontology using common/standardized concepts in MDR for the Semantic Web Evolution Ontology Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Goal and Purposes  The goal of this proposal is to provide the Specification support of ontology using the concepts in MDR  The purposes of this proposal are to promote the followings: Faciliation usability of MDR under the Semantic Web environment Building of ontology schema consisting of standardized concepts – i.e., well-known concepts or generalized concepts, which are accepted by general users as well as domain experts Easy and clear understanding of concepts across corresponding same or similar application fields More formalized building of ontology Ease of definition (building) of ontology Enhancement of interoperability between ontologies 6 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Scope  This Part of ISO/IEC 20943 covers procedures (method or guidance) for the specification (building) of ontology based on ISO/IEC 11179 (2nd Ed.) – This part is based on only the second edition of ISO/IEC 11179. provides just a method to use concepts in MDR for building ontology – e.g., How to utilize MDR to define a Concept for an ontology This part does not contain ontology building methods by a specific ontology description language, such as RDF, RDF-S, OWL, Topic Maps, KIF, and so on 7 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Framework 8 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO) 8 MDRs (Sets of concepts) MDRs (Sets of concepts) realized build Metadata Registry (ISO/IEC 11179) Metadata Registry (ISO/IEC 11179) DEC CD DE OC... 9 Understanding with an Example  MDR sample = (CD, OC, Property, DEC, DT, Rel) DT: Data types CR: Relations between Classes  CD = {Student, Professor}  OC = {GraduateStudent, FullProfessor}  Property={name, age, address}  DEC = {GraduateStudent.name, GraduateStudent.age, FullProfessor.name, FullProfessor.age, FullProfessor.address}  DT = {String, int}  Rel = {advise, advised} 9 Status Report of the Study Period on Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Issues: Scope  Scope of this Part covers procedures (method or guidance) for the specification (building) of ontology based on ISO/IEC 11179 (2nd Ed.) – This part is based on only the second edition of ISO/IEC 11179. provides just a method to use concepts in MDR for building ontology – e.g., How to utilize MDR to define a Concept for an ontology This part does not contain ontology building methods by a specific ontology description language, such as RDF, RDF-S, OWL, Topic Maps, KIF, and so on 11 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Issues: Scope (cont.)  There are two comments related with the scope of this part This part first considers the ongoing work on 11179-3 (3rd Ed.) – from Canada for the Wuhan meeting, August 2009. This part considers the ongoing work on 19763-3 (2nd Ed.) – from the Wuhan Study Period meeting 12 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Issues: Scope (cont.)  Korea suggests that with the following reasons, we'd better first develop this part 20943-6: PSO based on MDR (2nd Ed.) Now there is an effort to harmonize MDR and MFI. MDR-3 (3rd Ed.) and MFI-3 (2nd Ed.) are under development. We need to support the existing MDR systems developed based on ISO/IEC 11179 (2nd Ed.) 13 Standardized Established a Strategy for Harmization This Part (20943-6) Harmornization effort of MDR and MFI Harmornization effort of MDR and MFI ISO/IEC 11179-3 (3rd Ed.) ISO/IEC 19763 MFI-3 (2nd Ed.) Revision of this Part New Project Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO) New subdivisions (for MDR-3 (3rd) and MRF-3 (2nd)) New subdivisions (for MDR-3 (3rd) and MRF-3 (2nd)) Considering MDR-3 (3rd), MFI-3 (2nd), & Hamornization Considering MDR-3 (3rd), MFI-3 (2nd), & Hamornization

Issues: Usage of “Specification” 14 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO) Wuhan MeetingKorean Suggestion We will use the words build, guidance, etc. and try to avoid the words specification and standard as they relate to this document. Korea decided to use “build” instead of “specify”.

Issues: Project Title  Current Title Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)  Canana Input: SC32/WG2 N1291 Since the proposal deals with specifying Ontologies based on MDR, we suggest this should be reflected in the project title. A simple change to the existing titles, removing ‘Web’ and inserting ‘MDR- based’ gives: – Framework for MDR-based Ontology Specification – Procedure for MDR-based Ontology Specification However, is it the Ontology or the Specification that is MDR-based? Perhaps the following would be better: – Framework for MDR-based Specification of Ontology – Procedure for MDR-based Specification of Ontology  Suggestion from the Wuhan Meeting, August 2009 The group suggests a name such as: – Guidance for Building Ontologies based on 11179-3 MDR and 19763-3 MFI 15 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Issues: Project Title (cont.)  Korea Suggestion We agreed that the word “Web” is removed from the original title 20943 family is based on ISO/IEC 11179 MDR. : 20943 project title is “ISO/IEC 20943, Information Technology -- Procedures for Achieving Metadata Registry Content Consistency” Therefore, we don't need to name using such a modifier “MDR-based” or “Based on 11179-3 and 19763-3 MFI“ – We need to follow the naming rule of 20943 family for providing conisistency  Titles Suggested: Framework for Building of Ontology (-gies) Procedure for Buidling of Ontology (-gies) Guidance for Building of Ontology (-gies) 16 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Issues: Additional? 17 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)

Future Plan  After this meeting, 1st Working Draft will be submitted 1st Working Draft will reflect the decisions and comments from this meeting  Submission Deadline? After this meeting ~ December 2009 18 Issues for Procedure for the Specification of Web Ontology (PSO)
