2 Lambaste - Verb  Attack, usually with words, criticize. John scornfully lambasted his dog for urinating on his new, freshly purchased carpet.

3 Impasse - Noun  A situation in which no progress is possible. As Judy argued with the judge, she realized that she reached an impasse in the case and haltered with her argument.

4 Jargon – Noun  Slang As Ms. Holly, a new substitute teacher, was casually walking down the hallway, she heard jargon which she never heard before at her old school.

5 Deter - Verb  Prevent, block As Monica was wheeling down the court and preparing to take a shot, Joe came and swiftly deterred her shot.

6 Tenuous - Adjective  Weak, thin Some people struggle on the tenuous line between reality and the dream world.

7 Vigorous - Adjective  Energetic, powerful After drinking 3 cans of red bull, John vigorously ran15 laps around the track without even becoming winded.

8 Amity - Noun  Friendship Jess, Sam, and Jen became best friends in preschool and have had a strong amity ever since.

9 Gravitas – Noun  High seriousness Mrs. Caroline, the most strict teacher at Bellview High, scolded the class for shuffling in the seats.

10 Emphatic - Adjective  Assertive, confident When I saw the questions on the test, I was emphatic that I would pass because I had been up all night studying.

11 Vehement - Adjective  Showing strong feeling, passionate Since Kevin worked out hard and constantly and hard he had a vehement attitude towards body building.

12 Preeminent - Adjective  Superior, outstanding, above the rest When it comes to animals in the wild, the lion is the preeminent animal because of the way they rule the kingdom.

13 Resurgence - Noun  Rebirth Over the past couple of centuries, there has been a resurgence of the capability of the modern day cell phone.
