Agenda – Wednesday, February 16, 2011 Writing 1.3 – Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained, persuasive, and sophisticated way and support them using precise and relevant examples. Reading 2.0 – Reading and analyzing the plot and other literary devices within the play Macbeth. Student Objective: Students will be able to use chronological order to identify, list, and write a business letter from Banquo to a trusted friend detailing his suspicions & fears about being murdered.

Vocabulary Chronological (adj.) arranged in the order of time: a chronological list of events. Example: Birth, Kindergarten, 6 th Grade, High School Graduation Example: Wake up, School, Sports/work, Dinner, Bedtime

Macbeth Act 3 – Letter from Banquo Rubric Writing Standards The letter is written in a correct business letter format that includes the date, salutation, body, closing, and signature. The letter’s purpose is clear, as stated in an introductory paragraph which is supported by details/facts in chronological order that are sufficient enough to clearly persuade or inform the reader of the writer’s intent. The writer uses appropriate vocabulary, tone and style that reflects knowledge of the intended audience. The writing demonstrates control of grammar, paragraph and sentence structure and shows accurate spelling and correct use of punctuation and capitalization. The letter has clearly been proofread and revised to improve word choice, organization and consistency.

Remember that the first rule of writing is to know your audience. In a persuasive letter, you state your opinion or your feelings about something that is important to you after you have introduced yourself. BODY You must sound as professional and passionate as possible. You do not want to belittle the reader or they will not finish reading your letter. Your letter needs to have the facts, reasons, and examples to support your position. Address issues that your reader may have in their argument. In a second paragraph, you must have solutions.
