 Learning Objective: I will be able to identify components of an effective learning objective and demonstration of learning.  Demonstration Of Learning: Write a learning objective and a demonstration of learning aligned to a specific standard. Identify the level of rigor using your verb list.

THE CORE PARAMETERS 4 1. What students have to know and be able to do (learning objective). 2. How you know students have learned what you have asked them to know (demonstration of learning). 3. Using effective instructional strategies to teach the objectives.

THE BOOKENDS WHAT DO I WANT MY STUDENTS TO LEARN? OBJECTIVE HOW DO I KNOW THEY “GOT IT?” DEMONSTRATION OF LEARNING (DOL) 5

A GOOD LEARNING OBJECTIVE IS NOT  An agenda or schedule  A description of the activity or the resource  The title of the film, book, story, etc.  A description of the vehicle or method used to teach a concept.  Disguised as an objective, but really is a description of what the teacher is going to teach not what the student is going to learn 6

A GOOD LEARNING OBJECTIVE IS  Answers the question: “What are students supposed to know and be able to do?”  Tied to a benchmark or skill needed to accomplish the standard  Understandable to students,  Written in student friendly language 7

 PRINCIPAL REFLECTION  WRITE A Learning Objective

THE CORE PARAMETERS 12 1. What students have to know and be able to do. 2. How you know students have learned what you have asked them to know (demonstration of learning). 3. Using effective instructional strategies to teach the objectives.

Demonstrations of Learning 13 A Demonstration of Learning is an activity or product through which students demonstrate that they have learned the objective of the lesson.

Characteristics of effective DOLs 14

CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE DOLS  Tied directly to the learning objective and the standard  Can usually be accomplished in five to ten minutes (link to formative assessment)  Requires students to demonstrate what they have learned over the last class period or two in a subject area  Is completed individually  Is different from a “check for understanding” 15

 PRINCIPAL REFLECTION  WRITE A DEMONSTRATION OF LEARNING FOR THE PREVIOUS LEARNING OBJECTIVES YOU COMPLETED

Examples of Learning Objectives and Demonstrations of Learning 17

EXAMPLE  Learning objective: I will be able to identify the main idea in a paragraph.  DOL: Given two separate paragraphs, I will correctly identify the main idea of each paragraph. 18

EXAMPLE  Learning objective: I will be able to round numbers to the nearest hundred.  DOL: Given six numbers, I will round to the nearest hundred correctly at least five of the numbers. 19

EXAMPLE  Learning objective: I will be able to provide evidence for my inferences.  DOL: Given two pictures, I will draw inferences and provide evidence for the inferences. 20

EXAMPLE  Identify an objective that you will teach next week  Underline the key words that would help create a DOL  Using your objective, write a DOL for it  Review your objective again:  Is it too broad?  Does it contribute to writing a DOL?  Do you need to change it? 21

DOL/EXIT TICKET WRITE A LEARNING OBJECTIVE AND DEMONSTRATION OF LEARNING FOR THIS LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON: DETERMINE THE MEANING OF WORDS AND PHRASES AS THEY ARE USED IN A TEXT, INCLUDING FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE SUCH AS METAPHORS AND SIMILES
