Squire Warm Up Design and Modeling
2
Day 1 What comes to mind when you hear the word engineering? Please write in complete sentences. At least 3 sentences.
3
Day 2 Have you ever heard of the acronym STEM? What do you think it means or what does it stand for?
4
Day 3 Finish your T-shirt and be ready to present it.
5
Day 4 What is the website to access the LMS (Learning Management System)?
6
Day 5 What do scientists do? You may refer to the concept map in your engineering notebook if necessary.
7
Day 6 Agriculture – the raising of crops and animals for food, feed, fiber, fuel, or other useful products Artifact – a human-made object. Biotechnology – all the technology connected with plant and animal life. Communication – the transmission of information through a common system of symbols, signs, behavior, speech, writing, or signals. Construction – The act or process of building, erecting, or constructing buildings, roads, or other structures.
8
Day 7 Energy – the ability to do work. One of the basic resources used by a technological system. Engineering – using technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems. Environment – the surroundings in which a person, animal or plant lives Ergonomics – the study of workplace equipment design or how to arrange and design devices, machines, or workspace so that people and things interact safely and most efficiently. Industrial – of, relating to, or resulting from industry.
9
Day 8 Innovation – an improvement of an existing technological product, system, or method of doing something Invention – a new product, system, or process that has never existed before, created by study and experimentation. Manufacturing – the process of making a raw material into a finished product; especially in large quantities. Math – the science of patterns and order and the study of measurement, properties, and the relationships of quantities using numbers and symbols. Nanotechnology – the science and technology of building devices, such as electronic circuits, from single atoms and molecules.
10
Day 9 Process – human activities used to create, invent, design, transform, produce, control, maintain, and use products or systems; a sequence of actions that combines resources to produce an output Science – the study of our natural world through observation identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanations. System – a group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements or parts that function together as a whole to accomplish a goal. Technology – the way people use resources to meet their wants and needs Transportation – the process by which passengers or goods are moved or delivered from one place to another.
11
Day 10 What is the difference between an invention and an innovation?
12
Day 11 What is the difference between a need and a want? Give an example.
13
Day 12 What is engineering?
14
Day 13 What is technology?
15
Day 14 List 5 types of engineering.
16
Day 15 Name two things in modern life that we would not have if an engineer had not created it. How would life be different without these things?
17
Day 16 What is ergonomics?
18
Day 17 Explain the difference between science and technology.
19
Day 18 What is design?
20
Day19 Which stage of the design process do you think is most important? Why?
21
Day 20 What is the first step in the design process?
22
Day 21 How many steps are in the design process? List them in order.
23
Day 22 What is done during the generate concepts step of the design process?
24
Day 23 Thinking back on the Design Squad video…Why is it important to Construct and Test a Prototype?
25
Day 24 What is done during the Evaluate Solution step of the Design Process?
26
Day 25 What is a design brief?
27
Day 26 What are criteria and constraints used for?
28
Day 27 Explain why the old way of measuring is not a good way to measure.
