3 Travel Motivators  Personal/relaxation and recreation – for fun/ relieve stress  Social and family – visit friends and relatives, to meet new people  Specialty travel – “once in a lifetime” type of trip ie. Olympics, religious pilgrimage, health treatment

4 Travel Motivators Cont’d  Business and work – business purposes such as convention, meeting, trade show  Cultural – desire to experience different culture, language, history

5 Travel Motivators Cont’d  Adventure – desire for exhilaration, risk, challenge, exploration  Environmental – desire to enjoy nature and wildlife ie. Game reserves in Africa, national parks in Canada

6 Why don’t we travel?  Travel Barriers  Factors that make it difficult for us to travel or force us to stay home  In choosing a destination, a traveler must overcome a number of obstacles. Some include:  Cost  Time  Health  Weather  Family Stage  Lack of Interest  Fear

7 Travel Barriers  Cost – We all have budgets. The cost of travel competes with other financial commitments, making discretionary income fluctuate. (ie. when fuel costs are low, travel increases).  Time – People have jobs, business, families, and other commitments that limit their time.  Health – Poor health may keep people from traveling; might also make it difficult to obtain travel insurance.

8 Travel Barriers Cont’d  Weather – severe winter weather limits travel in those affected areas; rainy season limits travel in those affected areas  Family Stage – Parents with young children may limit travel because of the added cost and inconvenience, or they may avoid certain types of travel.

9 Travel Barriers Cont’d  Lack of Interest – People have other interests or are not interested in travel.  Fear – Political conflicts or high crime rates in areas may deter people from traveling there.
