TSI Project Funded by Implemented by Kick-off training seminar Brussels, 4-6 November 2014 Pitcairn Islands - Innovation for Sustainability Jacqui Christian Pitcairn Islands’ Representative

38 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 38 Where are the Pitcairn Islands located?

38 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 38 Where are the Pitcairn Islands located? Pitcairn Islands - half way between Tahiti and Easter Island

Pitcairn Islands 2 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 2 What does Pitcairn need to become sustainable again?

38 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 38 UK Overseas Territory Current local aging population of 50 - need 100 - 150 Large international interest in: - descendants of Bounty Mutiny, Polynesian history - pristine environment - MPA Plans & UNESCO (Henderson Island) & Endemic species Over 1700 enquiries for settlement but no jobs, limited business opportunities and limited infrastructure Current Information

More private income and better standards of living More government income and less aid dependence Affordable communication and transport Affordable electricity to promote business growth Regular people movement between Pitcairn and abroad Population growth and balanced ratios of age groups A healthy community - environmentally, economically and socially 38 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 38 Desired Outcomes

What are our assets? What are our challenges? What are our opportunities? What are our threats? 38 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 38 So where do we begin?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 What are Pitcairn’s Assets? 4 diverse Islands with endemic flora & fauna Large pristine ocean Remoteness = clean & green (blue) Unique people, culture &heritage

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 People with good work ethic & entrepreneurial attitudes What are Pitcairn’s Assets?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 What are Pitcairn’s Assets? 4.6 Square Kilometres of Fertile soil & 1600 mm rainfall per annum + other islands

38 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 38 Henderson Island - UNESCO

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Pitcairn & Henderson - Flora & Fauna

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Ducie - Pristine Marine life - large Exclusive Economic Zone

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 What are Pitcairn’s Challenges? Small, Aging Population Lack of Human Resource including Environmental Management Expensive Internet Expensive Electricity Lack of Infrastructure and Investment Small Private Sector Economy Remoteness - Lack of accessibility

Pitcairn Islands More young people A thriving private sector economy Support services 5 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 5 More people - especially younger Investment in private sector economy Investment in Infrastructure Investment in Environmental Management What are our needs?

35 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 35 Investment in Infrastructure Private Sector Economic Development Environmental management To Generate Repopulation What are our opportunities and goal?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Environmental Issues & Opportunities Renewable Energy Electricity Generation Waste as Resource management Invasive species management Protection & Preservation of Endemic Species

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Renewable Energy Generation What if we could invest in Solar PV generated electricity for all buildings feeding into a grid where we could add other renewable energy sources if necessary? What about using wave energy generation? What if we developed pumped water storage rather than batteries that we can’t dispose of?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Invasives & Waste as resource? What if we could use our invasive Roseapple trees as an export product or for biomass generated renewable energy?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Waste as a Resource? Could we reuse our imported glass to: create souvenirs for the tourism market or to make building products or even reuse them to bottle a Pitcairn produced beer? Could we make bio-fuel from our abundant fruit?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Tropical fruit to beer or bio-fuel? Bounty Beer

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Economic Development Opportunities Tourism Market identified in 2009 - Tourism Department set up and growth already in cruise ship numbers – but they still can not land!

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Tourism Markets What if we focused on niche markets of people staying on island each week? Bounty and Polynesian history Affectionardos Ornithologists/Scientists Ham Radio Enthusiasts Divers Wellness centre seekers

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Economic Development Tourists staying on island creates demand for: 1. Domestic Market Development e.g. fresh fruit and vegetables farming, goat and chicken meat farming, supplying fish, eggs, cheese, bakery products, restaurant/bars...etc 2. Export Market Development - currently honey, but could also develop specialty coffee, beer, fish and vegetables to Mangareva...

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Tourism All tourism is limited by the limited accessibility to the island. What if we put a charter air service back on the agenda and bring in 9 -18 passengers each week?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Accessibility? versus Accessibility - landing more tourists - affordable travel for locals

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Accessibility? What if we built a cruise ship terminal? What if we created a business model that could take Pitcairn off budgetary aid?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Accessibility?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Accessibility?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Tourism - Landing More Cruise Ship passengers 40 ships per annum currently go between Easter Island and Tahiti ~ 2000 people per ship. They pay us to land – why not develop a business model based on landing cruise ship passengers? How many tourists can we sustain, do we need or even want?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Supporting Infrastructure Renewable Energy Electricity Generation Affordable Internet Sealed Roads - we could then choose renewable energy rather than fossil fuel driven vehicles? What if all house designs & Cultural centre buildings were built in an Environmentally Sustainable way?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Why not use the Pitcairn Islands as a model for a totally unique, sustainable community? In the process we save a dying nation, we share its beauty and we can educate the world on how to create sustainable tourism?

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Without investment, these may be the last Pitcairn Islanders, or with, we could create long term sustainability for Pitcairners and a special group of islands for controlled access by the global community

TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 27 Partnership – who wants to help? EU - EDF, SPC, National Geographic, Pew, RSPB, Darwin Initiative, TNO, Go Dutch Consortium private friends with an interest in Pitcairn… We cannot borrow funds for investment alone…and We need technical assistance to draw up a sustainable business model that makes the difference

35 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 35 Infrastructure - job creation and business opportunities Private Sector Economic Development Environmental Management- job creation/ business opportunities Repopulation & Sustainability Conclusions - To Investigate...

35 TSI Project Funded by Implemented by 35 Repopulation & Sustainability Innovation for Sustainability- “we as a community aren’t done yet.” www.pitcairn.pn Thank You
