Increased tensions in the Balkans, and suspicion amongst major powers led them to form alliances.
Nations agreed to defend each other in case of attacks.
Triple Alliance – (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy)
Triple Entente – (Britain, France, Russia)

Imperialism of Asia and Africa during the late 1800s led to competition between the major global powers.
Germany’s rapid industrialization and expansion threatened Britain’s power.
Balance of Power – increased tension amongst these nations.

German nationalism – rapid expansion and industrialization led Germany to seek to imperialize further.
French nationalism – France looked to regain its position in world dominance, angered by their defeat to Germany, and loss of Alsace and Lorraine.

Pan Slavism – Russia promoted the unity of Slavic nations, while the Austro-Hungarian empire sought to break up all Slavic peoples.
Russia vowed defend all small Slavic nations.
