1 1849  Before Confederation  NB, NS and PEI  Upper and Lower Canada  NL was without most of Labrador  Vancouver’s Island  Most of BC was New Caledonia  Central Canada was Rupert’s Land  North-Western Territory was huge  Alaska still belonged to Russia

2 1862  5 years before Confederation  British Columbia now has its current name  Northern BC was Stickene Territory

3 1867  Confederation  NS, NB, Canada East and Canada West join together  Canada East is now Quebec  Canada West is now Ontario  Alaska has been bought by the USA

4 1873  Manitoba (smaller version) joined Confederation in 1870  British Columbia joined in 1871  PEI joined in 1873  North-West Territories expanded (no more Rupert’s Land)  Newfoundland and the Arctic Islands were still British territories

5 1882  Manitoba and Ontario have grown  North-West Territories now includes Far North  North-West Territories now broken into several districts

6 1895  Ontario has expanded a little more

7 1905  Saskatchewan and Alberta join Confederation  Yukon created from the western portion of the Northwest Territories  Canada is now 38 years old

8 1912  Manitoba grows to its current size  Newfoundland gets Labrador (disputed by Quebec), but is still a British territory

9 1977  Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949  Canada now has 10 provinces and 2 territories  Canada is now 110 years old  This is the map most of your parents grew up with

10 1999  Nunavut is created from the eastern portion of the Northwest Territories
