3 What are the session aims? To provide you with an outline of the:  Aims of the project  Outcomes of the project  Roles and responsibilities of project staff  Research methodology  Support available to schools  Expectations of participating schools

4 What are the project aims?  To enhance the achievement of pupils with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) at Key Stage 3.  To develop pedagogic strategies, programmes and materials for wider national use in secondary and special schools.

6 What is the project structure? Development WingEvaluation Wing Phase 1: Teaching innovation Phase 2: Trial of teaching innovation Phase 3: Design of materials and dissemination activities In Phases 1 & 2 with a focus on:  Participating pupils with MLD  Achievements  Teaching and learning  Teacher and school factors

7 What happens in Phase 1? Phase 1: Teaching innovation  Core sample of 20 teachers from secondary and special schools serving pupils with MLD in KS3.  Develop high quality lessons in literacy, English, the arts and humanities, etc.  Trained in high quality lesson design approaches.  Design, deliver, review and refine lessons.  Lasts from January to July 2011.

8 What happens in Phase 2? Phase 2: Trial of phase 1 outputs  The materials, lessons and teaching approaches generated in phase 1 will be trialled with an ‘outer’ group of another 20 teachers from the same authorities.  This ‘outer’ group of teachers will test the lesson ideas and teaching approaches and advise.  Their experiences in the classroom will be used to refine the teaching materials before they are disseminated in Phase 3.

9 What happens in Phase 3? Phase 3: Materials design and dissemination  The outputs of phases 1 and 2 will be disseminated nationally through forming partnerships and various networks.  Workbooks for teachers plus DVD  This phase will be informed by the outcomes of the Evaluation Wing of the project.

11 Who are the teachers involved?  Represent two of the three following curriculum areas: English, Humanities or Art  IT, science and maths are also represented  Enthusiastic, confident and committed to teaching pupils with moderate learning difficulties  Attend and participate in an introductory workshop  Attend the interim and final one day cross-school conference

12 What is required of schools?  A signed Memo of Understanding  Attendance at the initial 2-day training conference  Gathering a small team of colleagues to form lesson study groups in school  Attending a 1-day conference in March 2011.  Planning regular internal lesson study meetings.  Collecting evidence  Contributing to on-line discussion  Attendance at a final 1-day conference in June 2011.

13 What support will schools get?  Total funding per school=£2,892  Training in Lesson Study approaches  Training in research methods  High quality workshops and conferences  Website support  Access to consultants

14 How will the outcomes be disseminated?  Project website  Dissemination partnership  Dissemination conferences  Focused meetings  Research papers  Professional and academic journals
