What is wind energy? Wind is a form of solar energy resulting from uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, formations on the earth’s surface and the rotation of the Earth. For nearly 100 years Americans have used small windmills to generate electricity in rural areas that don’t have electricity.

More facts of Wind Energy Wind is a form of solar energy. Wind flow is motion energy that can be captured by mechanical wind turbines. Wind energy in the United States generated a total of fifty- two (52) billion kilowatt hours in 2008. That’s enough electricity to serve 4.2 million households or to power the whole state of Colorado. American Colonists used windmills to grind corn and wheat and to pump water.

The greatest potential for generating electricity from wind energy from Virginia is to locate turbines in the mountains (especially Highland County) and offshore (Eastern shore/ Virginia Beach).

Benefits of Wind Energy Is a renewable resource. It off-sets billions of pounds of carbon- dioxide. The production has few environmental impacts,(does not create air, water pollution, or greenhouse gases) Benefits
