Slavery In Ancient Rome Slavery in ancient Rome played an important role in society. Slaves performed many domestic services. Greek slaves were highly educated. Unskilled slaves, or those brought to slavery as punishment, worked on farms, in mines, and at mills. Their living conditions were brutal, and their lives were very short.

Duties & Punishments for Slaves Slaves were considered property under Roman Law. They had no legal rights to their citizenship. Slaves were treated very unfairly. Mostly women, they did men’s work out on mills and farms and they also could have been forced to sexual exploitation. The testimony of a slave could not be accepted in a court of law unless the slave was tortured with full proof.
