TSA-TSNM International September 2006 6 Passenger & Cabin Baggage  Although checkpoint security technology has not been changed substantially since the 1980’s, there have been some significant refinements, along with some new tools  Currently, the U.S. has deployed:  1,900+ Enhanced Walk-Through Metal Detectors (EWTMD)  1,900+ Threat Image Projection-Ready X-ray (TRX) systems  1,200+ Explosives Trace Detection (ETD) units, mainly for alarm resolution  96 Explosives Trace Portals (ETP) at 36 airports  Next generation technology seeks to detect a broader threat base, automate threat detection, and enhance potential threat imagery for effective and efficient alarm resolution 2006/TPT-WG-28/AEG-SEC/016

TSA-TSNM International September 2006 8 Air Cargo  Volume and diversity of air cargo makes the task of finding small amounts of explosives challenging  U.S. is operationally testing and evaluating the capabilities of available EDS and ETD technologies to support cargo screening  Two phases have been completed with promising results  Third phase is being conducted with deployment in various locations  Must evaluate systems under extreme environmental conditions  Must determine capabilities for screening additional cargo commodities for a broad range of threats  Current pilot program is evaluating use of Hardened Unit Load Devices (HULD) to transport air cargo baggage on passenger aircraft 2006/TPT-WG-28/AEG-SEC/016
