Green Chemistry By Emmie Guy 10 Orange

What is meant by the term green chemistry? The term Green Chemistry relates to creating new products, chemicals and procedures to have a positive impact on our environment in order to take care of the world we live in by preventing pollution.
3
What are the 12 principles of green chemistry? Prevent waste- Don’t create waste, then you don’t have to clean it up. Design safer chemicals- Using chemicals with less toxins in order to benefit our health as well as the environment. Find safer ways to make synthetic products- use synthetic or biosynthetic products that have little or no effect on us or our environment. Maximise atom economy- to make sure the maximum amount of chemicals are used when making products to make sure nothing is wasted in the process. Use safer solvents- use solvents that will make the most of their duty and have little effect on the environment. Use renewable reactants- Use waste from other products or processes. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

What are the 12 principles of green chemistry? Maximise energy efficiency- to reduce the impact on the environment, be safe about how much energy you are using. Avoid chemical derivatives- avoid chemicals that are derived from a similar compound. Use catalysts whenever possible- to speed up chemical processes Design biodegradable products- to reduce the effect on he environment, design products that can decompose by 80% in 21 days. Use real time analysis to prevent pollution- to avoid creating hazardous substances, keep track of your time when creating products. Minimise the potential for accidents- use chemicals that minimise the potential of explosions. Chemical releases and fires. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.

Pyrocool Technologies PYROCOOL F.E.F How is it used by the organisation? In 1993, Pyrocool Technologies designed a highly biodegradable and non toxic fire extinguishing foam. It can be used by anyone as an alternative to put out fires, big or small. It works just as well as other fire extinguishers, and has little effect on the environment.
6
Which of the 12 principles does this relate to?
7
Benefits to the company- organisation and the environment It’s a lot lighter compared to other extinguishers It’s not messy, as it’s more like a soap that dissolves than a foam that leaves mess It puts our fires with more concentration, so less foam is going to waste The chemicals used are less harmful to the ozone layer It’s easy to use and works no matter the orientation It’s very affordable at only $26
8
Benefits to the company- organisation and the environment It is also rust proof, non- poisonous and non-magnetic. Doesn’t affect your health Can be used in confined spaces Doesn’t have a corrosive effect on electronics Lasts longer than 4 years Extinguishes a varied range of gases and materials
