To know what Parliament is and what it does. To understand how Parliament is split into the House of Commons and the House of Lords To identify the role of each.

Parliament is a country’s law-making body. It is a group of people that assemble to talk about laws and issues. It consists of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Monarch.

Debate proposals for new laws Make sure the Government is doing its job properly Raise issues brought to their attention by constituents Bring in experts to discuss new laws. Debate topical issues Look at how our taxes are spent Issues that Parliament discuss include: health, the environment, transport, jobs, schools, crime

The House of Commons consists of 650 elected MP’s. This part of Parliament has the greatest political power. Their main role is as a law making body. They are also responsible for ensuring that the voices of citizens are heard, acting as a focus for national debate and recruiting a government.

There are 760 members of the House of Lords. There are 90 members who are hereditary peers (have inherited their title and are not appointed). The other members are appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Lords three main tasks are: Making laws Consider public policy Holding government to account

In the election you vote for an MP. Elections happen every 5 years and this is when people chose who they want to represent them. The party with the majority of the vote will form the government.
