2 Skeletal System  Bones are living  Skeletal system has five functions  Gives shape and support  Protects internal organs  Muscles attach to bones  Blood cells are formed in the marrow  Stores calcium and phosphorus

4 Skeletal System  206 bones in the human body  Compact bone – contains bone cells, blood vessels, and calcium deposits  Spongy bone – small, open spaces to make bones lightweight  Marrow – in spongy bone and produces red blood cells  Cartilage – flexible bone that aids in motion  Ligament – connects bone to bone at joints
