Skeletal System Bones are living Skeletal system has five functions Gives shape and support Protects internal organs Muscles attach to bones Blood cells are formed in the marrow Stores calcium and phosphorus

Skeletal System 206 bones in the human body Compact bone – contains bone cells, blood vessels, and calcium deposits Spongy bone – small, open spaces to make bones lightweight Marrow – in spongy bone and produces red blood cells Cartilage – flexible bone that aids in motion Ligament – connects bone to bone at joints

Skeletal System Joints – place where bones meet Immovable joint – skull Ball and socket – shoulder, hip Hinge – knee, elbow Gliding – vertebrae, wrist Pivot – arm, leg
