6 6 The practice of psychotherapy is the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional or behavioural disturbances by psychotherapeutic means, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, based primarily on verbal or non-verbal communication.  Not exclusive to College of Psychotherapists …nor to regulated professionals  Unregulated practitioners may provide services that fall within the scope Psychotherapy – Scope of Practice 6

7 7 “…to treat, by means of psychotherapy technique …an individual’s serious disorder that may seriously impair his or her judgment, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning.” Controlled Act of Psychotherapy ( Subset of Scope of Practice) 7

8 8 Exemption in Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) for counselling “Communication made in the course of counselling about emotional, social, educational and spiritual matters” … is exempt from regulation Exemption for Counselling 8

9 9  Prohibits anyone who is not a member of the College* from holding him/herself out as qualified to practise psychotherapy * or one of the other authorized Colleges ‘Holding Out’ Clause 9

10 10  MOHLTC disagreed with RMHT category as proposed, i.e.  those whose work overlaps scope of practice; and  who may be doing the controlled act, e.g. addiction counsellors  Outcome: deferral of RMHT title Deferral of Reg. Mental Health Therapist 10

11 11  Physicians  Nurses  Social workers (by exemption)  Psychologists  Occupational therapists … along with their professional designation or the name of their regulatory College Other Regulated Professions may use “Psychotherapist” title (but not Reg. Psychotherapist) 11

12 12  If your work primarily involves the practice of psychotherapy, you should consider becoming a member …unless you’re a member of another college  If your work involves the controlled act of psychotherapy, you must become a member …unless you’re a member of another college, or MOHLTC creates an exemption What does all this mean? 12

13 13  must take care not to work with clients who have serious disorders…  may not use any protected title, variation or abbreviation  may not ‘hold themselves out’ as qualified to practice psychotherapy in Ontario Unregulated Practitioners … 13
