THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CLIMATE
3
USA - Climate Large size and geographic variety many types of climate Temperatures - vary greatly Extreme temperatures — -62° C. in Alaska and 57° C in California. Annual rainfall - also very varied Annual rainfall records - 11,680 mm in Hawaii, <50 mm in the deserts of the Southwest The greatest seasonal change in temperature - the interior of the country. Hot summers, cool winters. Coastal areas - relatively little change throughout the year.( the influence of offshore ocean currents).

Types of climate Humid continental Humid subtropical Humid tropical Mediteranean West Coast marine Middle Latitude Stepp and Desert Tropical Desert Subarctic
6
Humid continental climate (Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma eastward to the Atlantic Ocean) 2 phases of the climate The northern phase occurs in the northernmost states from the Dakotas to Maine Summers short and cool; winters long, snowy, and severely cold. Temperatures in Minnesota, eg -13° C in January, 19° C in July.
7
The southern phase : long, hot summers and short, cold winters. Temperatures in Missouri, -1° C in January, 26° C in July. South Dakota in winter Missouri
8
Humid subtropical (from eastern Texas to the Atlantic Coast) the highest annual rainfall in the country - 1,000 to 1,500 mm. summers - long and hot; winters are short and mild. Mississippi, for example - 8° C in January, and 28° C in July.
9
Humid tropical ( southern tip of Florida, Hawaii) warm weather all year; a lot of rainfall no snow Temperatures in Miami, 19° C in January, and 28° C in July.
11
Mediterranean (central and southern California) Little rainfall summers - long, hot, dry winters - short, mild, rainy snow not frequent For example, temperatures in Los Angeles 13° in January 23° Cin July
12
San Francisco Nappa Valley - California
13
West Coast Marine (Pacific coast - from northern California to the Canadian border) climate doesn't change with seasons ( thanks to the protecting Cascade Range and the influence of the Pacific Ocean) winters mild summers cool In Washington, for example, 4° C in January 19° Cin July. snowfall, about 200 mm a year
14
Middle Latitude Steppe and Desert (the Great Plains, most of the Intermountain region) Rainfall – very small amounts Summers -very hot Winters - extremely cold; in the northern section very long, cold, and snowy. In Great Falls, Montana, for example, -6° C in January, 21° C in July snowfall, about 1,470 mm
16
Tropical desert Tropical desert (southwestern Arizona and southeastern California) Very dry, lot of sunshine summers – long, hot winters – warm Phoenix, Arizona, averages 33° C in July, and 11° C. in January.
17
Subartic (interior of Alaska, along the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean coasts) Winters are severely cold, averaging -24°C July temperatures average 16° C considerable snow, limited annual rain
