6 Workplace Partnership for Life AHA has been a national sponsor since the campaign began in 2011 Partnerships with state hospital associations Encourage hospital participation Distribute WPFL materials and add to AHA website (www.aha.org) To date, have added 328,000 in state registries from the hospital family and the communities hospitals serve

7 Profile of Small and Rural Hospitals 19.3% of U. S. population resides in rural areas (2010 census) 2,042 rural community hospitals (1,640 with fewer than 100 beds) 4,710 medical/surgical hospitals in the U.S. 43.4% of all U.S. medical/surgical hospitals are in rural areas with fewer than 100 beds Often the largest, or second largest, employer in the community Impact on community as a place to settle, locate a business or retire

8 Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) 1,330 CAHs in 45 states, each maintaining 25 or fewer beds to provide essential medical care and health services (some with 2 beds) 8 million treated in CAH Emergency Departments 38 million outpatient visits to CAHs 809,000 + admissions 82,000 deliveries

9 Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) Special Challenges: Special Medicare payment structure provides funding of 1% above costs – under attack; about 60% of revenue from governmental sources Attracting physicians and other clinical staff to rural communities Fluctuating census – constant readiness, but variable patient admissions and outpatient levels Staff “wears” multiple hats In “frontier” areas, nearest hospital may be 50-100 miles away Growing use of telemedicine, clinical affiliations, and system integration
