1
The Scientific Process Learning Target: I can generate and evaluate a question that can be answered through a scientific investigation, as well as plan and conduct an investigation, collect data and come to a conclusion about that data.
2
Steps of the Scientific Process
3
Identify a Problem/Question Research Use your resources to find out what people already know about it Use: Books, Journals, Magazines, Internet, TV, Videos, or even Interview Experts
4
Identify Variables Dependent Variable… same as the Responding Variable… when you graph, it goes on the Y-axis Manipulated Variable… same as the Independent Variable… when you graph, it goes on the X-axis
5
Identify Variables Independent Variable- the variable you are choosing to change Dependent Variable- the variable you are expecting to be affected because you changed the independent variable Controlled Variables- all the variables that stay the same for each experiment VALIDITY- having a controlled experiment
6
Make a Prediction to form a Hypothesis First, make an educated guess or a prediction for what you THINK the answer is - THEN - Format a hypothesis based on that prediction
7
Form a TESTABLE Hypothesis The “If Statement” of your hypothesis is the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE The “Then Statement” is the DEPENDENT VARIABLE and is the effect from the “if statement” The “Because Statement” should be the scientific reasoning explaining why the “if” causes the “then”. Make sure your “because” statement is proving to me that you know the content
8
Let’s Practice!
9
Design and Conduct Experiment Tips for writing clear procedures Number them! Include pictures where helpful Details- how much? When? How often? 1 action per procedure What data will you record? When will you record it? Where will you record it?
10
Let’s Practice Grab a piece of colored scratch paper and a partner You can cut a half sheet in half again to share with your partner On the piece of paper, write a NICE message to your partner and sign your name Without them seeing, hide the piece of paper somewhere in this classroom Next, write detailed procedures to tell them where to find the piece of paper If they find it without cheating, you pass! I’m ALWAYS watching…
11
Collect and Analyze Data/Observations Class Period Pizzalato’s Anxiety Level/10 Day 1Day 2Day 3Average 3rd9636 4th7867 5th5233.33 6th4433.67 Compare and look for trends and patterns using graphs
12
Draw Conclusions Was my hypothesis supported by the data? MUST USE: CLAIM-EVIDENCE-COMMENTARY FORMAT RELIABILITY- completing the same experiment 3 times!
16
Use Conclusion to Develop New Hypotheses (multiple) Now I want to know… *Make sure it’s still related to your original experiment
