Possessive and Plural Nouns

What do they do? Possessive nouns tell us who (or what) owns or has something. Possessive nouns answer the question “Whose?”

Rules-Possessive Nouns (Singular)
Rule #1: To make a singular noun possessive, just add “s” Example: Tom->Tom’s fault Example: Amanda->Amanda’s job Example: the student->The student’s backpack Example: the Jaffers->The Jaffers’s house.

Rules-Possessive Nouns (Plural)
Rule #1: add ’ to a regular plural noun that ends in “s” Example: dogs-> dogs’ leashes Example: boys-> boys’ books Rule #2: if the plural noun does not end in “s,” add ’s Example: geese-> geese’s pond Example: group-> group’s project Example: children-> children’s homework
