Introduction to First Aid  First Aid is the early help or treatment given to a casualty of an accident or sudden illness before the arrival of an ambulance, doctor or other qualified person.  The Principles Of First Aid are – To Preserve life – To Prevent the condition worsening – To Promote recovery.  Priorities in first aid – in order to manage situations correctly and to fulfil the principles of first aid, it is necessary to understand the concept (idea) of the priorities of treatment ( what you should do first). This can be remembered by DRABC  Danger – is it safe for yourself, the casualty and others?  Response – assessing the casualty level of response and consciousness?  Airway – ensuring the patient has a clear and open airway?  Breathing – is the casualty breathing?  Circulation – is the casualty heart beating?  If the above are correct, you can then check for other injuries.

7. Applying First Aid  Is he/she conscious-YES- assess injuries call 999 if needed  NO- gently tilt head back to open airway remove any obstructions,are they breathing?  NO - call 999 START CPR ONLY IF QUALIFIED TO  YES - place them in the recovery position call 999

8. Emergency First Aid –Severe Blood Loss (Haemorrhage)  In the case of bleeding  Put on disposable gloves if available  Apply direct pressure over the wound with a clean dressing or pad  Lay the casualty down and raise the injured limb above the level of the heart if possible, secure the dressing, call 999  Watch for signs of shock
