1
The Measure of Things: The Metric System
2
Why do we need a common system of measurement ? / People can SHARE information / Communication is easier / People can SHARE information / Communication is easier
3
Why METRIC? / Simple System / Base 10, no messy calculations / Easier Conversions
4
Two systems / English system / 12 in. = 1 foot / 3 ft. = 1 yard / How many inches in 2.56 yards? / English system / 12 in. = 1 foot / 3 ft. = 1 yard / How many inches in 2.56 yards? / Metric system / 10 mm = 1 cm / 100 cm = 1 meter / How many milliimeters in 2.56 meters? / Metric system / 10 mm = 1 cm / 100 cm = 1 meter / How many milliimeters in 2.56 meters? 2.56 meters x 10, x 10 again, 2,560 centimeters Take 2.56 yards x 3 ft, then times 12 inches 92.16 inches in 2.56 yards
6
Units / Units are written as one or two lowercase letters. / One exception! / liter is capital L / Why not lowercase? / kg / mm /L/L /L/L / mL /g/g /g/g
7
Base Unit / A base unit is the standard for measurement. Mass: gram Volume: liter Distance: meter
8
Metric Conversions Kilo 0.001 units Hecto 0.01 units Deka 0.1 units Basic Unit 1 Deci 10 units Centi 100 units Milli 1000 units To convert to a smaller unit, multiply by ten. (or, simply move decimal point to the right) To convert to a larger unit, divide by 10 (or, simply move the decimal point to the left)
9
Practice Kilo 0.001 units Hecto 0.01 units Deka 0.1 units Basic Unit 1 Deci 10 units Centi 100 units Milli 1000 units Using the units for Mass(grams): How many centigrams in 15 grams? How many kilograms in 32 grams?
10
What is mass? What is volume? / Mass is the amount of matter in an object. / Volume is the amount of space something takes up. / Mass is the amount of matter in an object. / Volume is the amount of space something takes up.
