What kind of Math do you need to know for the AP Exam?
2
Some helpful hints: Use exponents whenever numbers are especially large or small. They are easier to work with. Remember you will not be permitted to use a calculator on the AP exam!!
3
Remember this: When multiplying numbers with the same base, you ADD the exponents. For ex: 2 2 x 2 3 = 2 5 When dividing numbers with the same base, you SUBTRACT the exponents. For ex: 2 6 ÷ 2 3 = 2 3 Anything to the power zero is just "1".
4
Use the dimensional analysis or factor/label method 1) How many centimeters are in 6.00 inches? (2) Express 24.0 cm in inches.
5
Be sure to know how to convert numbers to % and to calculate percent change For ex: Five out of these sixteen otters are female. What total percent are female? 5/16 x 100 = 31.35%
6
How to calculate % change % Change = value at end of period minus value at beginning of period divided by value at beginning x 100 OR % change = V present – V past x 100 V past To further calculate an annual percentage rate of change, divide the % change by the number of years between the two values (past & present)
7
Keep it simple! Practice reducing numbers to their lowest terms! Remember that the numbers will be likely to be simple to manipulate.
8
Show ALL of your work Include all steps to calculations, even if they are so simple Label all answers with units! NO NAKED NUMBERS!
9
Know some basic metric prefixes for simple calculations A simple way to remember: Many= mega Kids= kilo Have = hecta Dropped = deca Dead= deci Converting= centi Metric = milli Units= micro ( µ )

Think Smart and be a good test taker! If you know math is your weak area, save the calculation parts until the end. Do EVERYTHING else and then go back to the math parts at the end.
