Specific Heat Page 7-9 in Unit 5 Packet

Specific Heat of Matter At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: 1. Define specific heat 2. Use specific heat to determine energy changes

Some Helpful Definitions: – Temperature – measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter – Heat – energy transferred between samples of matter – Specific Heat – The amount of energy required to warm 1 gram of a substance by 1°C or the amount of energy required to be released to cool 1 gram of a substance by 1°C – Joule – the SI unit of heat (energy) 1 Calorie=4.184 Joules

Basically, SPECIFIC HEAT is a measurement of how easily things warm up and cool down

Heating Curve Review… A B C D E

Notes for Specific Heat Calculations: Show all work!!! When setting up problem, make sure the units match – Ex: if mass is given in grams, make sure specific heat is in J/g ⁰C, not kJ/kg ⁰C Circle your final answer and include units! Round answer to 2 digits past decimal point Heating up, q will be positive. Heat is being absorbed Cooling down, q will be negative Heat is being released
