WORK AND ENERGY
2
POTENTIAL ENERGY An object can store energy as the result of its position Potential energy is the stored energy possessed by an object
3
CALCULATING POTENTIAL ENERGY Potential energy = mass x acceleration of gravity x height Mass- kilograms Acc- m/s/s Height- m PE- joules (J) PE = mgh
4
PE EXAMPLES A stuntman is standing at the top of a 25 meter building. He has a mass of 72.6 kilograms. What is his potential energy? A 500 kg rollercoaster has 1102.5 kJ (or 1,102,500 J) at the peak of its first hill. How high is the hill?
5
KINETIC ENERGY What do you think the definition is?
6
KINETIC ENERGY Kinetic energy is the energy of motion Anything moving horizontally or vertically
7
CALCULATING KINETIC ENERGY Kinetic Energy = ½ x mass x velocity squared Mass- kilograms Velocity- m/s KE- Joules KE = ½mv 2
8
KE EXAMPLES Determine the kinetic energy of a 625-kg roller coaster car that is moving with a speed of 18.3 m/s. Missy Diwater, the former platform diver for the Ringling Brother's Circus, had a kinetic energy of 12 000 J just prior to hitting the bucket of water. If Missy's mass is 40 kg, then what is her velocity?
9
What is the relationship between kinetic energy and potential energy?
