Corruption Defined Different definitions depending upon jurisdiction Corrupt conduct, as defined in the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act 1988 (NSW), is deliberate or intentional wrongdoing, not negligence or a mistake. Transparency International definition - the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. Bribery: the offering, promising, giving, accepting or soliciting of an advantage as an inducement for an action which is illegal or a breach of trust. Fraud: any attempt to deceive another party to gain a benefit

Classes of Corruption Petty corruption Smaller scale and occurs within established social frameworks and governing norms Grand corruption Acts committed at a high level of government that distort policies or the central functioning of the state, enabling leaders to benefit at the expense of the public good Systemic corruption Systemic corruption (or endemic corruption) is corruption which is primarily due to the weaknesses of an organization or process.

Transparency International Non governmental organisation that monitors and assesses corporate and political corruption in international development. Founded in Germany (and headquartered in Berlin) in May 1993. Publishes an annual Corruption Perception Index – a comparative listing of corruption worldwide.
