Fly, Fight and Win… The 50,000 foot View 4 Integrate Simulation Technology into Education, Training and Sustainment platforms Build a Distributed Human Patient Simulation Network Exploit Technological Innovations Mitigate loss of Current “Training” pipelines
5
Fly, Fight and Win… WHAT IS SIMULATION? 5
6
Fly, Fight and Win… What is a Simulator? 6 A Device or exercise that enables a participant to reproduce or represent… A method to teach the application of critical thinking skills, communication and team interactions; Risk Free learning Environment – errors can be allowed to occur
7
Fly, Fight and Win… What is a Simulator? 7 A Device or exercise that enables a participant to reproduce or represent…
8
Fly, Fight and Win… What is a Medical Simulator? 8 A Device or exercise that enables a participant to reproduce or represent… Supports clinical decision making – not just a task trainer; Ability to train high-risk, low-frequency clinical events
9
Fly, Fight and Win… WHY USE SIMULATION? 9
10
Fly, Fight and Win… 10 The Promise
11
Fly, Fight and Win… Why Simulation for Training 11 There is a big difference… …between seeing and understanding… …between watching and doing… That’s what makes training and simulation so vital to operational success
12
Fly, Fight and Win… How do People Learn 12 Retention 5% - Lecture 20% - Audio/Visual – Death by PowerPoint 30% - Demonstration 75% - Learn by DOING – Simulations 90% Teach Others – Collaborative Simulations Interaction is associated with Learning achievement and retention of knowledge * Source Andersen Consulting
13
Fly, Fight and Win… WHY WE NEED SIMULATION 13
14
Fly, Fight and Win… Chasing Zero We entered combat operations with an existing stateside AE mission, and AF fixed medical facilities Those training venues no longer exist One decade at war…How are we doing? 72 Hours 98% Increasing Focus on Patient Safety 14
15
Fly, Fight and Win… Level 1 Trauma CenterAF Theater Hospital Multiple procedures/ specialists** >80% need surgery >90% penetrating trauma ~8000 admissions/yr<10% need surgery <30% penetrating trauma ~4000 admissions/yr 15 Why we need Simulation

Fly, Fight and Win… AE Formal Training Unit iSTAN is currently used in conjunction with aircraft fuselage trainers to provide “simulated” training missions Flight Nurse and AeroMed Tech training reduced from 90-180 days to 30 days Same or exceeding the level clinical “Care in the Air” 18

23
Fly, Fight and Win… Suspend Disbelief We must replicate the Environment of Care 23
24
Fly, Fight and Win… No matter what the ‘Environment’ 24
25
Fly, Fight and Win… 25 So how do we ‘Simulate’ that
26
Fly, Fight and Win… The ASTEC… 26 …an immersive training environment that includes very realistic clinical scenarios with high-fidelity simulated patients… We can simulate onboard emergencies. When you are inside, the sound, the feel, the environment, is absolutely realistic, and we are able to challenge crews with highly complicated missions that are modeled on actual missions and challenging patients who have returned from combat environments
