POETRY A type of literature that expresses ideas, feelings, or tells a story in a specific form (usually using stanzas and verses)

POETRY FORM STANZA - a group of lines of poetry, usually similar in length and pattern. Many poems are divided into stanzas that are separated by spaces. Much like a paragraph, each stanza usually develops one idea.

POETRY FORM VERSE A single line of poetry Example: One quick scratch Of a kitchen match And giant flames unzip! How do they store So huge a roar In such a tiny zip? ________________________ How many stanzas? How many verses?

RHYME When words in a poem have the same or similar sound.
She ran as fast as she could, leaving us amazed where we stood. Activity: Rhyme group game

RHYTHM The beat created by the sounds of the words in a poem Example:
Twinkle, twinkle little star How I wonder what you are

RHYME SCHEME A regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem. Example:
Bananas are ripe and green, and gingerroot, Cocoa in pods and alligator pears, And tangerines and mangoes and grapefruit, Fit for the highest prize and parish fairs.

ALLITERATION Consonant sounds repeated at the beginning, middle, or end of a line of poetry. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Activity: Alliteration group game

IMAGERY A mental picture created by what is written (five senses).
Example: The rookie baseball player slid across the plate in a haze of gray smoke. “You’re out!” screamed the ump, as the dust died around the child.

Hyperbole Exaggeration often used for emphasis.
Examples: My dad had a cow when he saw my grades! OR I have tons of homework today.

ONOMATOPOEIA The use of words that sound like the action they represent. Examples: Buzz, bark, pitter-patter, whoosh, honk, bang

The hands of the clock ached as time approached midnight.
PERSONIFICATION A figure of speech that gives human qualities to objects or ideas. . Example: The hands of the clock ached as time approached midnight.

SIMILE A comparison of two things using “like or as”
“The vines were like golden chains around the flower stem.”

METAPHOR A direct comparison of two unlike things (does not use like or as) Example: My neighbor is a pig.

Symbol/ Symbolism A person, place, object, or an action that stands for something.

IRONY A contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually exists or happens. i.e. – in “After 20 years” we expected a friend to show up. We find out he’s been there the whole time.

DENNOATION A word’s dictionary definition.
Heart- an organ in the body who’s main function is to pump blood throughout the body.

CONNOTATION The ideas and feelings associated with a word.
i.e. – “Heart” might bring about feelings regarding illness or love. `
