What is depth of field? Depth of field is the area from near to far in a scene that is acceptably sharp in a photograph.

Here, the lens is set to it’s widest aperture, f/2, and focused on the middle boy, who is at a distance of 7 feet.

When the lens is stopped down to its smallest aperture, f/16, the depth of field increases. Almost the entire scene - everything between 5ft. and 3ft. - is now sharp at the same focusing distance of 7 ft.

Depth of Field Project: Shoot 16 photos of shallow depth of field. Shoot 16 photos of deep depth of field. Make a contact sheet. Pick one of your best shallow and one of your best deep depth of field. Save the best photos as lastname.shallow.psd and lastname.deep.psd Turn in both along with your contact sheet. Save as lastname.contact.psd
