The Problem!! Suppose Jill dropped 10 counters on the workmat and 2 landed in the first box, 1 landed in the second box, and 3 landed in the third box. The others landed off the mat. How could you use counters and a number sentence to find how many landed on the mat?

What number sentence can we write to show this problem?
LET’S SEE! 2 landed in the first box. So let’s put 2 counters in the first box. 1 landed in the second box so let’s put 1 counter in the second box. 3 landed in the third box, so put 3 counters in the third box. What number sentence can we write to show this problem?
10
Let’s Explore!! Use your workmat. Drop your counters on the mat.
Try to get as many in the boxes as you can. Record your results on your workmat for numbers 2 and 3.
