We follow the workshop model which contains an independent work period in all subject areas Increased level of independence – students will have a greater independent work time as teachers work with students in small groups, conferences, and goal setting Increased expectation in depth of writing in all content areas Greater growth in reading Differences between K and 1

No grades the 1 st Six weeks of school Grade on an A to F scale We have formative and summative grades We grade with rubrics Some work is completed in journals or is kept for their writing binder Work samples and exemplars will be sent home at least once every Six weeks Graded work will come home in Wednesday Eagle folders Keeping up with grades – you can sign up for grade-book alerts when new grades are entered Grading

Developmental Reading Assessment Beginning of Year Expectations: Level – 6 End of Year DRA Expectations: Level - 20 BOY: Read independently for 10 minutes EOY: Read independently for 25 minutes Log books read Write responses to share connections, predictions, or favorite parts with text evidence Orally retell what the book was about Reading

Have your student read aloud to you nightly Prompt the student to solve problem words using word solving strategies Talk about the book after reading Make reading fun and read lots of different genres!! Ways to Support Reading at home

Correct letter formation and size Correct spacing between letters and words Consistently spell K and 1 sight words correctly Write in complete sentences using correct capitalization and punctuation Write personal narratives Write critically in content areas Writing

Practice writing sight words in complete sentences. Write about fun things your family does using sequence words: first, next, then, and last Ways to Support Writing at Home

Conservation of Numbers Identifying, Counting, Ordering, and Comparing numbers to 120 using Place Value Identify addition and subtraction situations Solve math problems: quick sketch, equation, solution sentence, and explain their thinking Math Combinations through a sum of 20 Math Goals

Homework will be based on guided reading needs. Spelling words will be based on your child’s guided reading levels. Math homework TBA

Assemblies All assemblies will be at the end of the day- 2:10. Spirit Assemblies K-1 Student Recognition Assemblies, which will recognize Character Traits, Super 7 Learning traits, and student improvement Grade Assemblies/ Perfect Attendance
