Basic Design Process These steps are common for al design areas to be covered in detail within the next few weeks: Scene Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Sound Design

1. Read the play Multiple times In these readings Designers will: -Look for special requirements -get a sense for the characters -gain knowledge of the given circumstances -begin to discern possible theme(s) of play, message of playwright

2. Meet with the Director: 1 st Production Meeting Goal of this meeting??? Production Concept: Definition ? The overall idea or focus that unifies all of the production elements -Set deadlines for final designs and completion date of design

3. Preliminary sketches/Research Designer will roughly sketch out preliminary ideas -present ideas to production team -then, set out to do a final design presentation after getting feedback from team

4. Final Design Presentation Designers will present a formal design communication device to production team. -this is either a model or a rendering (painting) -very detailed, artistic, and precise showing what the final product will look like This will also be shown to cast and crew to orient them to the production elements

5. Execute the Design -Designer then develops other communicative drawings/sketches/elevations that explain how design is to be built - must be precise and clear in order to communicate to shops and technicians - Sometimes sent through mail and need to be interpreted without the designer present
