Leon Trotsky Born in Ukraine, father was a Jewish farmer Began working for underground organizations as a teenager Exiled to Siberia where he became a Socialist; escaped Siberia, spent next 15 years in Europe 1903, Party split into Bolsheviks (majority-Lenin leader) and Mensheviks (minority-Trotsky leader) After February Revolution in 1917, he returned to Russia and made peace with Lenin, once again a Bolshevik First appt in the new Soviet gov’t was foreign commissar—negotiated the peace with Germany after WW1 How would you describe this man?

Built up the Red Army (Soviet Army) which defeated the Russian Military’s White Army in the Civil War He saw himself as Lenin’s heir apparent but when Lenin died, Stalin easily took over control of the Soviet Union He was exiled and went to Mexico in 1936 In 1940, an assassin, on orders of Stalin, stabbed Trotsky with an ice pick Trotsky died the next day
