2 Colonies Reasons they were settled
Massachusetts Religious Freedom Better Life Connecticut Better Farmland Dissatisfaction with Puritan Leaders Rhode Island Roger Williams forced out of Massachusetts due to his belief in the separation of church and state.

3 Help from the Native Americans
Their 1st winter in America, almost half the Pilgrims died of malnutrition, disease and cold. Squanto & Samoset, Pawtuxet Indians showed the Pilgrims how to grow corn, beans & pumpkins and where to hunt and fish. Massasoit, a Wampanoag leader signed a treaty with the Pilgrims and the 2 groups lived in harmony.

4 New Settlements Great Migration The Puritans chance to create a new society in America based on the bible. 15,000 Puritans journeyed to Massachusetts to escape hard times in New England. Fundamental Orders of Connecticut The first written constitution in America, described the organization of representative government in detail. Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Policy of religious toleration. The first place in America where people of all faiths could worship freely.

5 Conflict with Native Americans
Settlers moved onto Native American lands without permission or payment. New England went to war against the Native Americans The war destroyed the power of the Native Americans in New England, leaving the colonists free to expand their settlements.

6 Chapter 3 Section 2 Vocabulary
Dissent- disagree with beliefs or practices. Persecute- to treat harshly Puritans- Protestants who wanted to reform the Anglican Church Separatist- Protestants who wanted to leave and set up their own churches Pilgrim- what separatists called themselves because their journey had a religious purpose Toleration- the acceptance of differences Mayflower Compact- a 1620 document that provided law and order to the Plymouth Colony.
