2. Goal To increase students knowledge and experiences while instilling a love for learning.

3. Winter Discuss What is Winter? Is it hot or cold? etc. Build the word “winter” using cut-out letters or magnetic letters. Mix up letters and spell. Compare seasons (could use Venn Diagram) ‏ Make a Winter Word Wall

4. Winter Winter Chart for one-to-one correspondence, read together, find the word winter with a pointer, build with sentence strips as class and then place in the pocket chart center.

5. Winter  Sort summer and winter clothing  Use shaving cream to create snow scenes.  Frolicking Frosty ~ positional words  Hibernate your very own class bear in a box!  Snowball Pass game (one little, two little, ect.) ‏

6. Winter  R ‏ EAD, READ, READ!!!  Reading aloud is the most important part of the day! Helps build vocabulary, builds knowledge, models good reading, and so much more!  There a thousands of wonderful winter stories!

7. The Mitten by Jan Brett Mitten Word Wall: Activate Prior Knowledge by brainstorming about mittens. Cut-out a mitten shape and write the words students brainstorm. Ex. Mittens are... Students use this chart to create their own sentence. Read the story for Enjoyment!

8. The Mitten by Jan Brett Invite someone to class to knit. Make a class book of the students writing and drawing about their favorite part of the story. Discuss RESPONSIBILITY –then match pairs of mittens Talk about things that come in pairs like mittens, socks, shoes, eyes, ect.

9. The Mitten by Jan Brett Act out the story using a large white sheet cut-out in a mitten shape. Give students cards or masks for the character and video tape. 12. Penguins The Traveling Penguin: Travel around the world with Paul. Taste test foods from each country and look at live pictures on the Web. Play Land or Water using a blow-up globe.

13. How do penguins stay warm? Make a blubber mitt using Crisco in a Ziploc bag. Place mitt on ice and on a heating pad. What is a Huddle? Create a class huddle and discuss how the person in the middle would be the warmest. Waddle like a penguin Penguins

14. Penguins carry their baby on their feet. Can you? Use a large pom-pom and try! Label the parts of a penguin On a large penguin brainstorm words that begin with the /p/ sound Create a rookery of penguins by placing penguins on the wall in a large group. Penguins

CENTERS Math: Mitten graphing by color, number order with snowmen Literacy: write names of animals from the mitten using chart, write winter words, sort words beginning with “p” Science: sort items for winter and summer, sort items for inside and outside, sort hot and cold, use thermometer to measure temperature
