4 Poem Style  Cavalier poem -musical, lighthearted verse -tried to imitate the grace and polish of classical Latin poetry -Carpe Diem “seize the day”  Tone- changes throughout the poem - insincere, sincere, melancholic, lusty  Themes: 1. life is short so don’t take things for granted 2. time is everything  Rhyme: uses rhyming couplets (aabbccdd….) -Example: (p.524 l. 1-8)  Rhythm: iambic tetrameter

5 Poem Style (other literary devices)  Hyperbole- (p. 524 l. 5) “Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side”  Expresses his emotions for his mistress but she is not truly in the Ganges  Allusion- (p. 524 l. 8-10) -refers to religious events
