CINEMATIC TECHNIQUE Production, Distribution, and Exhibition Perception and technology: The process of motion picture reception…or shall we say deception. 1 2 3 Motion picture camera rapidly records a series of still images at the rate of 24 images (or frames) per second After processing, editing etc. the release print of the film is projected theatrically at the same rate (24 fps) onto the screen Two related phenomena - “critical flicker fusion” and “apparent motion” - help to create the illusion of movement in these still images.
