2009-2013 Construction – starts in < 12 months! Parasitic machine shutdown – May 2011 through Oct 2011 (6 months) Accelerator shutdown start mid-May 2012 Accelerator commissioning mid-May 2013 Now-2012 Challenging balance act! Expectation is to complete ~80% of approved 6 GeV program (Ops funding -limited) Skill mix – lean (but improving) engineering and design manpower 2013-2015 Pre-Ops (beam commissioning) Hall A commissioning start ~October 2013 Hall D commissioning start ~April 2014 Halls B and C commissioning start ~October 2014 12 GeV Upgrade: Phases and Schedule

NSF – MRI grant for Hall C detector systems approved June 2007 ; (W&M/HU/JMU/NCA&T) strong collaboration of experienced Hall C Users detector integration review scheduled for Jan 22, 2008 Virginia – PED funds ($650K) FY06/07 ; Construction funds ($500K) FY08 Non-DOE Scope

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Page 22 Hall C Users Jan 18, 2008 Potential (proposals in development): Foreign: Hall B Central Detector EU proposal Two NSERC requests (re Hall D BCal ; Hall C Cerenkov) NSF MRI: Hall B Preshower (OU/NSU/JMU) Hall B Longitudinal Polarized Target (possible, non-12 GeV) ; (ODU/CNU) Virginia – request for $9.5M Construction funds FY09-11; Governor’s budget includes $7.5M in FY09-10 so far…. Non-DOE Scope

12 GeV Upgrade Summary Construction start in < 12 months Critical Decision 2 in November 2007 (baseline) Critical Decision 3 in September 2008 (construction start) We are on track for accomplishing this, but PED schedule is tight ! Challenges: Maintaining/building science case within political arena – Users! Balancing ongoing operations with construction project – communication! Note - Quarterly meetings with Hall 12 GeV Steering Committee reps, UGBOD Chair, and 12 GeV Project Mgt reps have begun ; J. Roche is rep for Hall C
