Should we only be preparing college bound Should they have marketable voc skills Teaching ethical and moral behavior Social skills addressed Each student taught the to the same standard

3 Standards Based Education An attempt to develop clear, measurable descriptions of what learners should know and be able to do as a result of education Performance standards – level of proficiency Content Standards – what is to be taught Why? Who decides? High stakes testing?

4 Changes in Society Political, both foreign and domestic No longer agree on right & wrong Increased diversity of learners Increased mobility

5 A Changed Population of Learners 25% in California are LEP Should we teach in languages other than English? Multicultural in curriculum? replacing what? Full inclusion? Behavior problems? Is increased achievement compatible?

6 Proposals for Improving Education Good ole days? Factory model education? Who should have control of schools? What should be the purpose of education? Who should be educated? How should we evaluate success?
