State Definition of Gifted “Gifted and talented student” means a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who: (1) exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area; (2) possesses an unusual capacity for leadership; or (3) excels in a specific academic field. District Advanced Academics Mission Statement The Advanced Academics Department, in partnership with parents and community, will engage students in a premier education, preparing them to be successful, productive citizens. 1 st Grade 1st Grade- Stewardship in the Global World: First graders will travel around the world. We will use clues/characteristics to research and discover where in the world we are headed. Once we discover the continent, emphasis will be placed on how cultures around the world adapt, and how we can make an impact and take care of the people, places, things, and creatures in our world. 2 nd Grade 2nd Grade-Going to Global Extremes with S.T.E.A.M. We will continue with 1st grade's unit as traveling around the world takes time! The second grade curriculum engages students in working as engineers to collaboratively solve problems while incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) into each learning experience. Integration of the global world and the Engineering Design Process gives this unit an extra hint of challenge. Revised August 2014

3 rd Grade Gloabal Structures: Manmade & Natural Third graders will explore ways in which engineers and architects use their knowledge to design, build, and test structures using their problem solving skills to find the best solutions for our future.
