LEARNING TARGETS I can identify the three steps to the prewriting process. I can correctly use the prewriting steps to prepare for my essay or on- demand.

THE PREWRITING PROCESS 1.BRAINSTORMING AN OVERALL IDEA 2.MAPPING OR WEBBING 3.FREEWRITING

BRAINSTORMING AN OVERALL IDEA Write down every idea that could be relevant to your essay. Make a list of each idea that comes to mind Does not have to be complete sentences List pros and cons of each opinion. Then choose which you support.

MAPPING OR WEBBING Write main idea in the center of your page and draw a circle around it. Write points that support your main idea out from the main idea, circle them, and draw a line connecting them to the main idea.

FREEWRITING Use paragraph structure to write all ideas as the come to you. Timed Activity Write until your time is up The purpose of freewriting is to get all of your ideas on paper.

EXAMPLE OF FREEWRITING How would the police really know if you had been doing it? I wonder if texting and driving is already illegal in my state. What about all cell phone use? What if you have an urgent call coming in that you need to take while you're driving? Surely its not dangerous to answer a call. This cannot be more distracting than drinking pop or eating while driving. You cannot make everything illegal while driving. An option would be to allow drivers to only use handheld devices while behind the wheel.
