The Search Screen The first screen you come to when using our Winnebago Electronic Card Catalog, is the search screen. See if you can answer the following questions about the types of searches you can do on our system?

If you typed in the following: elephants What kind of search are you probably going to make? It could be this one but another one is a better choice. Are you really looking for the book titled “Elephants”? Are you really looking for a book written by “elephants”? Right! You are probably looking for a book about “elephants”. (Click on the type of search you think is correct)

If you typed in the following: Blume, Judy What kind of search are you probably going to make? Probably not. Try again! Are you really looking for the book titled “Blume, Judy”? Right! You are looking for a book written by Judy Blume. I don’t think so. Try again! (Click on the type of search you think is correct)

If you typed in the following: Poppi and Rye What kind of search are you probably going to make? Probably not. Try again! Right! You are looking for the book titled “Poppi and Rye”. Are you really looking for a book written by “Poppi and Rye”? I don’t think so. Try again! (Click on the type of search you think is correct)

The Search Result Screen When you make a search you will usually gets some “results”. Click on the headings of the different parts of the following “Materials Found” screen to refresh your memory of what they tell you.

AB C D Call Number F or FIC = Fiction book Number = Non-fiction book R or REF = Reference book E = Easy book P or PB = Paperback book The call number tells you where to find the book in our library. Title Name of the book Author: Who wrote the book? Last name first, First name last Is the book in? 1/1 = book is in 0/1 = book is out Double click book to get: Click on these

The Book Detail Screen The book detail screen gives you all the information that we have about that book. See if you can identify the parts of the book “Details” screen that will give you the following useful information…

Click on the part of this screen that tells you how many pages the book has. (The pointer will turn to when you are on the right part of the screen; just left click when it does.) That’s Right! “Physical Description” tells you how many pages the book has. It will also tell you: - if the book has illustrations (ill), - if the illustrations are in color or black & white (col. or b&w), and - how big the book is (24 cm.)

Click on the part of this screen that tells you who wrote the book. (The pointer will turn to when you are on the right part of the screen; just left click when it does.) That’s Right! “Author” tells you who wrote the book. The authors last name is listed first, followed by their first name.

Click on the part of this screen that tells you who made the book. (The pointer will turn to when you are on the right part of the screen; just left click when it does.) That’s Right! “Publisher” tells you who made the book. The city where the book was made is listed first followed by the name of the company that made the book.

Click on the part of this screen that tells you something of what the book is about. (The pointer will turn to when you are on the right part of the screen; just left click when it does.) That’s Right! “Summary” tells you something of what the book is about.

Click on the part of this screen that tells you when the book was made. (The pointer will turn to when you are on the right part of the screen; just left click when it does.) That’s Right! The “Publication Date” tells you when the book was made. This is also known as the “Copyright Date”.

Click on the part of this screen that helps you locate the book in the library. (The pointer will turn to when you are on the right part of the screen; just left click when it does.) That’s Right! The “Call Number” tells you where you can find the book in the library. If the first part of the call number is letters (PB, E, F or FIC) then the book is found in the Fiction section of the library. If the first part of the call number is numbers then the book will be found in the non-fiction part of the library (000-999). If the first part of the call number is ‘R’ or ‘REF’ then the book will be found in the Reference section of the library.
