Take out your homework – (yesterday’s Troy questions) Write in today’s date and objective on your student log. Open your notebook and respond to the following prompts: Make effort, not excuses. USE YOUR TIME WISELY! Imagine you got into a serious brawl with someone. How would you go about being friends, (or at least friendly), with them after that? Write one full paragraph.

No kings. o Senate was made of wealthy families (called Patricians) who appointed 2 consuls each year. o Consuls were the highest authority, but shared power and had to agree on all decisions. 10 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Rome expanded across Europe and Africa by creating partnerships with its conquered people. In exchange for joining the Roman Empire, the conquered peoples were: o Usually granted full citizenship o Given tax and legal benefits o Allowed to keep their native customs and traditions

11 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ A series of three wars between Rome and Carthage - (an empire across the Mediterranean Sea)

12 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Rome wins and captures the islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily…

13 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Carthage is bitter and invades Italy. A Carthaginian general named Hannibal sneaks into Italy by crossing the Alps - (a crazy huge mountain range) – with his entire army and 37 war elephants. Why elephants???

14 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Because they’re terrifying, that’s why! Hannibal is incredibly successful and hands Rome several massive losses.

15 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Hannibal razes - (completely destroys) - Roman towns for 16 years before Rome decides to attack Carthage and he is forced to retreat home to help.

16 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Rome invades Carthage with over 100,000 troops and totally destroys the city… they even salted the earth so that nothing could ever grow there again. Okay, seriously? A THIRD one?

17 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Modern day Carthage Modern day Rome Gee, who won?

18 The Roman Republic: ________________________________________________________ Romans often enslaved captured soldiers or anyone else they didn’t find useful. o 40% of all slaves were captured soldiers (the rest were debtors or criminals) o Romans feared slave uprisings o Slaves took jobs from the commoners so the people were given food and other benefits (Ancient-style Welfare/ food stamps)
