1 Repeated Readings: Increasing Fluency Through the Use of IPods Title

2 Why Do I Care About Fluency? 7 out of 8 struggling readers in the first grade are struggling readers in the 9 th grade. Those with below grade level reading skills are twice as likely to drop out. 70% of prisoners fall into the two lowest levels of reading proficiency Basically, reading abilities in the primary grades follow a child throughout their school careers and beyond. 3 The Problem Poor fluency and poor comprehension follows a student through their school careers, causing them to struggle in several content areas. The purpose of reading shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. The Solution Use repeated reading to increase fluency. IPods will be the tool in which repeated reading is implemented. Students will track as they listen and whisper read at the same time. Repeated reading will be used daily Introduction

4 What Does the Research Say? Fluency is made up of three parts: accuracy, rate and expression Reading a lot is the most powerful way to increase fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. As fluency increases, more cognitive space can be focused on what a student is reading, and thus comprehension increases Literature Review

5 Repeated Reading Repeated reading exposes a student to the same text over a period of time, allowing them to master the text before moving on. This can be done in three ways. 1.Read aloud to themselves 2.Listen to and/or read along with the text 3.Read to themselves quietly Literature Review

6 Focus & Purpose The focus of this research is to improve fluency and comprehension through the use of repeated reading. Who & What 2 nd grade students At-Risk Students Reading below grade level Repeated Reading through the use of IPods Area of Focus

7 Research Questions 1.What happens to the comprehension of my strategic reading group when I incorporate repeated reading through the use of IPods? 2.Can IPods offer the support during repeated readings to increase fluency during a cold read? 3.Will students find reading instruction more enjoyable through the use of IPods, then before the use of IPods? Research Questions

8 Methodology Who – 2 nd grade students – At-Risk or reading below grade level Intervention – Repeated Reading – Students will listen, track and whisper read as they listen to the selected story on an IPod. When – Daily

9 Materials 5+ IPods or ITouches 5+ Headphones Auditory story to accompany written text Pre and Post Personal Survey Observation Checklist Cold Read (first day of the week) and a practiced read (last day of the week) on the same passage. Volunteer Methodology

10 Discussion Purpose Use repeated reading to increase fluency Increased fluency will increase comprehension Repeated reading will be implemented through the use of an IPod Hope to Learn I hope to learn how repeated reading impacts fluency.
