1 Weekly Objectives  Students will demonstrate mastery of vocabulary by completing a vocabulary assessment.  Students will demonstrate mastery of understanding an epic poem by means of a written assessment.  Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences using the Standard English conventions of grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

5 Writing Assessment The Epic Like Odysseus and his companions, all people face challenges and difficulties that they must overcome. Similar to Odysseus,there are times when one must be a leader and demonstrate heroism in the midst of life’s perils. Research US Airways in the Hudson River news story. 6 Research Assignment After researching the US Airways Hudson River new story think about the following: What makes Capt. Sullenberger a hero? How does he compare to Odysseus? How does Capt. Sullenberger’s crew differ from Odysseus’ crew? Think about character traits. Draw inferences

Are they similar or different from Odysseus and his crew?  Were the gods with Capt. Sully? If so, think about the gods from the Odyssey that might have been on his side.  Do Odysseus and Capt. Sully’s actions seem consistent with what you expect of an epic hero?
