History Jose Pre-1983ILT (Instructor-Led Training) 1984-1993CBT (Computer Based Training) 1994-1999Internet 2000-PresentLearning Management Systems

Types of e-Learning There are three types of e-Learning available to the student: 1. Online Courses 2. CBT’s 3. Self-Paced tutorials Student e-Learning. Instructor e-Learning. There are 5 basic types of e-Learning systems available for use by instructors wishing to set up courses: 1. Programming Languages 2. Authoring Packages 3. Learning Management Systems (LMS) 4. Content Management Systems (CMS) 5. Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS)

Types of e-Learning There are five characteristics of e-learning software: 1.Maintainability 2.Compatibility 3.Usability 4.Modularity 5.Accessibility Characteristics

Differences between e-Learning and Traditional Learning E-LearningTraditional Learning Employ more “active” learningInvolve more “passive” learning Instructors “delivering” knowledgeMore learner-focused Instructors guide the learners and model good learning techniques Most course delivery is verbal Higher percentages of student participation occur in online classes Higher-achieving, outgoing, verbal students have the best participation in these courses Written communication is much more important for the online class than for a traditional one Technology is a secondary factor

Pluses and Minuses of e-Learning PlusesMinuses Less time is spent commuting Teachers need to learn to perform their jobs differently Online classes are better for part- time students who work Often online classes are more time-consuming than traditional ones Location is not important Sometimes it is difficult to transfer course content to an online format Classes can be more customized and flexible Students and teachers need the proper equipment and accessibility for the course

Types of Users (Humanware) From these characteristics we can derive the types of users: 1.Flexibility 2.Location 3.Career Advancement 4.Age 5.Physical Condition Reasons to take online courses

Types of Users (Humanware) Commitment Motivation Organization Self-directed learner Access to the technology necessary to participate in online education Enjoy sitting in front of your computer Enjoy working alone for relatively long periods of time (a couple of hours at a time) Characteristics for Success

Hardware Server Bandwidth Desktop computer Handheld device Storage Jose

Software / Technologies Used Academic WebCT Blackboard Website Corporate LMS –Active Learner –ATrain ES LMS / LCMS –Boniva Learning Management Jose

Benefits for Business Increased Productivity Self paced programs Flexibility Reduced Costs Online Employee off-time Employee Moral Feedback

Future (Trends) 1.Greater adoption of e-learning by small, medium, and large sized companies, 2.Mobile learning (m-learning), 3.Peer-to-peer (P2P), 4.Expanded use of virtual classrooms, and 5.Blended learning solutions Jose
