Unit Joule *Energy James Prescot Joule Energy Transfer
General potential kinetic heat example –as a weight falls it turns a paddle wheel to heat the water by friction. The potential energy of the weight is converted first into kinetic energy (motion) of the paddle wheel then to heat energy detected by measuring the temperature of the water.
2
Year The experiment purpose –to examine a sample in order to recreate the set-up system (a group of objects or units so combined as to form a whole and operate or move interdependently and in harmony.
3
Materials pegboard 2 brackets 2 bolts 1 paper clip Thermometer 1 copper tube **don’t bend tape ml beaker 1 spool of thread 1 pulley with bolt water 1 – 5 sinkers foil
4
-make a chart of the information # of sinkers water temp. oC
Set up experiment apparatus -Drop sinker -To move the paddles -To raise the water temperature -Measure and record the water temperature -record the water temperature after rewinding and dropping the sinkers several times with the same amount of sinkers on the string each time then change the amount of sinkers and repeat dropping them to raise the water temperature. -make a chart of the information # of sinkers water temp. oC
5
-disassemble 5 minutes before class is over
-make a graph Title Variables control –what you touch -always goes on the X axis -independent what changes as a result of your actions –dependant -always goes on the Y axis C X axis # sinkers y a x I s
6
Units y . X # sinkers 0C -coordinate pair (x,y)
number of sinkers and temperature pair -describes a point on a graph y . X
7
Line graph Best straight line graph ***Use a ruler Could extend the line to predict what the points would be past what you already have
8
Questions to answer in General part of write up
What is the energy supplier What type of energy is it What is the energy receiver Plus include background information about the topic in the general part of the write up
9
Chart Title -same as graph title Variables (at least two)
Ordered pairs Example Joules Chart _______________________________ # of sinkers Temp degrees C ORDERED PAIRS
10
Graph Title Labels Units
Points that correspond to the ordered pairs on the chart Could extend the line to predict more sinkers Example Joules Graph -title
