What would you consider to be the characteristics of a good leader, and why?

A. Niccoló Machiavelli (1469-1527) 1. Diplomat from Florence. Lived in a time of great political unrest. 2. Wrote The Prince (1513): Guide for rulers on how to gain, maintain and increase political power in a world where most people are selfish and corrupt.

B. Why is Machiavelli a product of the Renaissance? 1. Believed that human behavior and human nature were worth studying and understanding (very humanist) 2. Rulers should do what they have to in order to control their subjects and create a stable society, even ignoring moral considerations (a more secular, less religious view).

A leader should take action no matter if that action is morally correct.

A good leader ignores the will of the people and does what he thinks is best.

Leaders may break promises to solve the problems of the state.

Before anything else a leader must be strong and powerful

Anyone who completely trusts others is just asking for trouble.
