NOTE: It is important that all 6 sides of corrosion strip be polished thoroughly. 2Finish polishing with 240 grit paper to remove any marks created by preliminary polish. 3Place polished strip in container of isooctane until ready for final polishing immediately prior to testing. 4Observe sample for haze (suspended water) or particulates – if either present filter sample through 2-3 P8 qualitative paper circles. 5Place 30 ml sample (measure sample in 50-ml graduated cylinder) into test tube. 6 Perform final polishing on test coupon by polishing first the ends, then sides with 105µm (150-mesh) silicon grains picked up with cotton ball pre-moistened with isooctane. IMPORTANT: Never touch silver coupon with bare fingers during or after final polishing. 7 Polish main surfaces of coupon with grains on absorbent cotton using long strokes carrying the stroke beyond the end of the strip – never polish in a circular motion. 8 Once final polishing is completed, clean any metal dust from the strip by rubbing vigorously with clean, pre-moistened cotton ball until a clean cotton ball remains unsoiled. NOTE: It is important that final polishing be performed using the larger grains rather than the silicon carbide paper. 9When strip is clean, immediately immerse in the prepared sample. IMPORTANT: Never open test cylinder immediately after removing from a heated bath without cooling as pressure within test cylinder will cause hot sample to splatter out causing possible injury. 14Once cool, open test cylinder (with cylinder oriented away from face) and remove test tube. 15Remove test coupon with forceps and immerse in isooctane withdrawing quickly. 16Dry coupon with lintless coth (by blotting not wiping) and inspect it for tarnish or corrosion. 17 Interpret results and give a classification to the test strip as follows: 18Report the corrosiveness in accordance with the classification corresponding to table in Step 17. Note: This procedure is only valid at the time of printing. The control version can be found on the Meraux Refinery intranet. Completed Date:Prepared By:Approved By:
